Teaching Handwriting Smarter

These are the 52 letters of the Upper and Lower Case Alphabets,
in the typical ABC order as most young children learn them and most teachers and adults still think of them. Unfortunately for kids, alphabetical order has nothing to do with how the letters are made, how difficult they are to make, or in what order they should be practiced to get the best results.

Learning to make the opposing slant lines of a capital A, does not help a child make the complex curves of a capital B. With only 3 guide lines, being able to locate the starting point of a well-made Capital C or 20 other circular letters, is well beyond the comprehension and spatial abilities of even the brightest 5 or 6 year old. Unlike adults and teenagers, 5-7 year olds are are still “concrete” thinkers and need see and touch what they learn. Thery cannot abstract and remember “places in space” without lines until they are 9 or 10 (that’s when they start fractions). This is why most children never develop good handwriting habits and why most adults still write like children.

Realizing this, The Teacher’s Alphabet presents letter making to young learners in an entirely new way and uses 5 lines. It has re-organized the Upper and Lower Case Alphabets into 11 Graduated Directional Teaching Groups and teaches the mastery of them by practicing 10 Foundation Exercises. Every teaching session uses 5 line “Special Spot” Paper and is based on a gradual development of pencil control and shape recognition skills.
The Upper case Letters shown here are Re-imagined into 5 Progressive Directional Teaching Groups.
